Orthokeratology or Ortho-K is a non-surgical alternative to
refractive surgery that corrects for astigmatism and nearsightedness. Nearsightedness or myopia is a result of the eyeball
being too long for the refractive capability of the lens. Astigmatism is considered a lens aberration resulting from a corneal
surface that is not spherical or symmetrical. Both are considered refractive errors.
During Ortho-K treatment, a series of tight fitting contact lenses
are prescribed to gently reshape the surface of the eye (cornea), therefore reducing the refractive errors associated with
astigmatism and myopia. Results are rapid. A high percentage of patients will have 20/20 acuity without corrective lenses
and will only have to wear a pair of retainer contact lenses while sleeping.
Dr. Childress has been involved in many contact lens studies and is nationally respected
and sought after practitioner in contact lens treatment.
